Never Forgotten essays
Never Forgotten essays Abortion is a very touchy subject for most people. It is a political fight that has extremes from both opinions. While most stories are told from the aborted childs side, Gwendolyn Brooks, the mother, comes from a womans portrayal of the situation. The mothers portrayal is very good. It makes the readers feel, even for a second, the pain and difficulty of the mother and her decision. Through this we can somewhat understand why or how someone would make this grueling decision. Although abortions are done for many different reasons, the children who are killed are never forgotten. The speaker of this poem is the mother. This is an elegy to the unborn child. The poem is from the mothers point of view. In the first stanza, the mother seems to be telling the audience everything that she would never be able to do to the child. For example, the mother mentions that she will never neglect the child, nor be able to scuffle off ghosts that come. The second part is more her apology and her explanation on why she went through with having the abortion. She mentions that she stole their births and their names. The mother knows that what she did was wrong, but at the time she felt that there was no other option in the situation. She tells the children that although she only knew of them for a short time, before the abortion, she loved them and always will. This poem uses many different types of language. The mother uses different ways to explain her feelings as well as the child itself. Brooks states ...damp small pulps with little or no hair, this is used to describe the child in the womb as it is developing into an infant. Another figure of speech Brooks uses, ...wind up a sucking thumb is used to describe a mother taking a childs hand out of his/her mouth and tucking the thumb down to train the child not to suck their thumb. The mother also implies that she gave birth ...

Writing Business Letters 1 - Essay Example Though the situation posed an ethical dilemma to the judges and might have been viewed as a set of a wrong precedent, the judge decision was appropriate and mandated by the circumstances. Moreover, ones right should not be infringed to protect another as in the case of Jodie right. The ruling by the judge to defend the right of life of Jodie is ethical even though it caused termination to the life of Mary. The decision of the judge had no violation to the law because even without conducting the surgery, Mary would still not survive (The Guardian, n.d). The attorney General conclusion to protect the judges from conviction and criticism further considered the need to remain objective while making the rulings. Mary would still die even without having the surgery and thus decision to protect Jodie right is prudent. Finally, protection of the weaker should not be taken to authorize the violation of the dominant one. Though the submissions of the catholic church, pro-life and the parents had some essence, the judges went ahead to reaffirm to them that the decision does not make killing lawful and gave a comprehensive explanation to their decision (The Guardian, n.d). Contextualization of the Archaeology of Qumran and the Dead Sea Essay
Contextualization of the Archaeology of Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls - Essay Example In the aftermath of de Vauxââ¬â¢s excavations in the 1950ââ¬â¢s up until the mid 1980ââ¬â¢s, it has been commonly assumed that the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in the nearby caves constituted the library of a Jewish sectarian community (most probably of the Essene sect that lived at Qumran). However, despite such apparent consensus, we ought not to narrowly focus our interpretation of the Scrolls, its authors (for which most scholars seem to agree are the Essenes) and the Qumran site itself when it comes to a proper analysis of contextualizing all three. In light of recent scholarship, the traditional sectarian explanation of Qumran combined with a more nuanced approach may possibly reveal that the site had at least a dual purpose beyond that of a certain sectarian settlement and more specifically was a place for the development of communal activities, including the production or manufacture of pottery. Moreover, could it have been possible that the Essenes employed non-Essen es to do certain functions? To be certain, it has long been argued since de Vauxââ¬â¢s excavation reports, that when placed in a proper historical and archaeological context, the caves, the scrolls and the ruins are altogether interconnected. To shed some historical perspective, according to Davies, Brooke and Callaway, the basis for this interconnectivity was originally the texts themselves found in Cave 1 and their later interpretation by de Vauxââ¬â¢s team of excavators, the members of the Cave 4 editorial team and most other scholars
